hi, i love you.
so i am very sleepy (very sleepy - free hot spiced rum cider makes for a cuddly world and a happy, snoozy mel), but i want to record for posterity the excitement of today. i had considered interpretive dance, but then decided a post would be a much more efficient use of the small amount of time before i roll into bed.
1 - last night i slept poorly. SUPER poorly. yuck.
2 - this morning i went out to start my car and it would not. start, that is.* so i took my dad's car to work and all was off to a bit of a rocky start, but well.
3 - sunday morning at stir crazy was wicked slow.
4 - until 12:30, when we got hammered.
5 - no between-shifts break for the meletor :(**
6 - the fire alarm went off.
secret knowledge i did not have at the time: 7 - there was a FIRE*** in the HEATING DUCT in the AIRLOCK. (ok it's a vestibule. but it's tiny and its only purpose is insulation. it's an airlock.)
8 - the sprinklers went off.
9 - ONLY the ones in the airlock, which is good, but it was soon flooded with ~3-4 inches of water that started shooting through the doors onto the main floor of the restaurant. which, in case you're curious, is WAY less awesome than it sounds.
10 - this happened in the middle of me explaining our market bar (mongolian bbq type thing, but better and less GROSS) to my nine-top.
11 - have i mentioned the fire alarm is STILL GOING OFF?
12 - have i also mentioned we have NEVER HAD A FIRE DRILL OR ANY EMERGENCY TRAINING? i feel like that was a grave error on somebody's part. awesome.
13 - i talk my table calm, keep them there, take their drink orders. rock the rest of their meal because damnit i am awesome, and they get to watch the firefighters come in and out and everybody frantically mop at the CONTINUING FLOOD and all that good stuff. btw LOUD FIRE ALARM IS STILL LOUD.
14 - long story short, we get everything fixed and comp half their meal (most tables have just gotten up and left by this point; this family is AWESOME and a set of total troopers). their comped bill comes to $55.
15 - they give me $125, a "merry christmas" note the little boy wrote on a napkin in blue crayon, and nine huge hugs and smiles.
16 - i go in the back of the house and cry.
in conclusion: OH GOD OH GOD MY LIFE WHAT?
p.s. and then we closed super early (because hello, FIRE) and all went across the parking lot to bravo's where they said "poor babies" and gave us free drinks and MORE FREE PASTA THAN I COULD FIT IN MY FACE. omnomnom.
*btw apparently the problem with my car was loose battery cables. the battery i have doesn't quite fit, somehow? anyway, we had the same problem about this time last year; the battery would move around a little over the course of driving hither and thither and would eventually shake itself loose and the car would go "thbbt". really, the battery is all of two years old and has no right to be dying in the cold, so i'm glad it was this again. we got it fixed for real by professionals this time.
**this happens relatively often on sundays, but today it was especially rough as i went to my manager with my cashout and he said "hey mel, can you pick up a table?" and i said "ok but i need to cash out :[" and he said "ok but then we're seating you with a nine-top" and i said "OK BUT I NEED TO CASH OUT >:[" and he said "awesome they're setting the tables up right now you should go grab waters." and i said ":D absolutely!" ... ***actual funniest part of this story: this is in fact the SECOND of my two places of employment to START ON FIRE in the past SIX DAYS. monday i walked into outpost to the smell of electrical fire and a-b-c chemical fire extinguisher and the announcement that "hi, the steamer kind of blew up. wanna help us gut and scour the kitchen?" that was a good time :D
also MY MOM GAVE ME A SAINT NICHOLAS STOCKING! it's a ziploc sandwich bag FULL OF CLEMENTINES. and a candy cane. with a note that says "this is a stocking". i love my mom. <333333333333
