From Henry V, at the moment my favorite.

K. HEN.
Indeed, the French may lay twenty French crowns to one they will beat us, for they bear them on their shoulders. But it is no English treason to cut French crowns, and tomorrow the king himself will be a clipper.

Good lord the WORD PLAY! Just look at it! .:: points frantically ::.
Incredible genius.

Henry V, eh?

Oh, sweetie ... have I got a treat for you.

Now, how to get it to you... *plots*

Once the swop over is done, no problem.

meanwhile... A little bit of Harry, and a fine night it would be, too ...

You - you - you ---
I'm supposed to be doing French worksheets!

Good god I adore you.

Now all the youth of England are on fire...

[identity profile] commodorified.livejournal.com 2005-04-18 06:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, Dear. I ought to have warned you about the French, then. Is it not dire?

:-)

I have the whole play. Sam West as Henry, Tim West as Chorus.

So now I know what to offer as encouragement gifts while you slog through finals; excellent.

Act One, MiLady...

It is terribly dreadful. So much worse spoken than it ever was read. *can't stop grinning goofily, with a side of squee*

Oh in the name of all that is good and literary...

I don't know whether to call you an angel or a temptress.

[identity profile] commodorified.livejournal.com 2005-04-18 07:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Errr, down with dualism? :-)

I just sort of admire how he can pack so much sheer dirty seduction into what reads as such a proper little courting scene

Re: Now all the youth of England are on fire...

[identity profile] meletor-et-al.livejournal.com 2005-04-18 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, sure. This is Sam West.
But yanno... it seems to read as a 'proper little courting scene,' and then, it's Shakespeare, and truth is he turns it on its ear. Dirty playwright.

A careful actor gets that.

Re: Now all the youth of England are on fire...

[identity profile] commodorified.livejournal.com 2005-04-18 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
YES. And at the same time, it's a bit of playacting within the play, cos really, what choice has she got?

And yet he gives her one. Or at least the illusion of one; enough that her pride is left intact; enough that he can feel he's getting a wife, not a prize.

But yes. Never trust a man who takes THAT long to explain that he's bad with words. :-)

Re: Now all the youth of England are on fire...

[identity profile] meletor-et-al.livejournal.com 2005-04-18 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Tres sneaky. But yes, it does make a body wonder, is he presenting it thus for her sake, or for his? (The Inner Mandeville says: always serving self-interest!) Honestly, I think it's a little of both, because Harry really is a good guy, as you see best in the way he leads his men. And what better way is there to know a man, than to see him lead?

Hee! No, never.

There is witchcraft in thy lips, Kate...

[identity profile] commodorified.livejournal.com 2005-04-18 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I think both. She's presented as very young, and I think he's moved to pity and to a sense of protectiveness, as well as wanting her, but also, he wants the alliance and he wants it willing and as friendly as possible. As Queen of England and France, she'd make a fairly formidable force for trouble, if she chose to.

Re: There is witchcraft in thy lips, Kate...

[identity profile] meletor-et-al.livejournal.com 2005-04-18 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Quite true. And from how quickly she picks up the language and nuance, she is also a sly young thing, and I don't doubt he sees that. 'Formidable force' indeed, and not one to perturb whether or not marriage and possession is actually up to her at all.

[identity profile] commodorified.livejournal.com 2005-04-19 12:51 pm (UTC)(link)
*nods* It's a rather heavily layered scene.

So, let me know when you're ready for the next act... :-)

Re: There is witchcraft in thy lips, Kate...

[identity profile] meletor-et-al.livejournal.com 2005-04-19 04:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that can be safely agreed upon, yes.

...You? Are a beautiful, beautiful person and I love you beyond all marginally sensible expressions.

(TRS: Act 1 safely on my harddrive; more please? With any luck - and all certainty of personal opinion - it'll wipe out the torture of listening to my own hair-rippingly disheartening Recorded Spanish Practice Oral Exam Responses)

Now All The Youth Of England Are On Fire ...

Or possibly they just give off smoke like that because they are so damned hot

Oh, and talking of word play?

We all have to be serious sooner or later...

But don't let's be serious all the time

*snerkle* Well doesn't that just put all other pants memes to shame.
