Preliminary Q&A for today's presentation revealed that the main question amongst the Youthful Janeites regarding the navy of the time is:

UNIFORMS

So, tomorrow's actual lecturette will come in two flavours -
"How did the post-war Navy affect Jane Austen's world?"
and

If all goes well, plans are to have colour handouts in which the boys demonstrate Looking Sexy -
votes are for Paul McGann to model Lieutenant's uniform, Jamie Bamber to model Midshipman, Russel Crowe Captain, and Jack Davenport Rear Admiral. That's as far as we got before Ike told us about her father's dress sword and we were lost.

So, in short, who has pictures?
I know you people do. Fork it over; hook me up. Good shots of our men in blue, for any rank from middie to Admiral.

Here's what we have so far (Thank you [livejournal.com profile] elessil!):
*Commander Horatio Hornblower, undress
*Lieutenants William Bush, Archibald Kennedy, and Horatio Hornblower, undress
*Midshipman Horatio Hornblower, undress (this is beginning to sound no small part dirty)
*Captain Jack Aubrey, undress
*Commodore James Norrington parading around in Rear Admiral's full dress

Here's what we're hoping to find:
-Midshipman, full dress In a fit of idiocy I seem to have forgotten that middies don't *do* full dress. *shame*
-Lieutenant, full dress
-Captain (preferably one with 3 years and one without), full dress
...basically, a bunch of full dress

-Also, some shots of higher-rank -- admirals and the sort -- would be much appreciated, as it saves myself from running to the library at 8:30 tonight to borrow HH, stalk Pellew / the Admiralty Board, and risk major distraction from proper schoolwork.

And I promise I shall share with the lot of you a facsimile of the A/V portion of my lecturette, in return (read: Picspam! with commentary). Among other lavishings of affection, adoration, and possibly drabble.

woot!

I'll keep my eye out for a few of the others, and if push comes to shove I'll borrow the relevant dvds from the library and screencap (I mean, I could have done the capping myeslf all along, but 1. publicity photos are much better quality, and 2. it takes time). But these are great! Thank you; a wonderful start!

(though Norrington's lieutenant garb made me laaaugh)

Would these help at all? Or these? (There's some nice full-length ones of Mr Crowe in the second link)

When are you doing this? I can maybe grab some screen caps of the Admirals in the Hornblower film if you like?

Reread this as a list of commands spoken by... hmm, let's say Commodore Norrington.

"Commander Horatio Hornblower, undress."
"Lieutenants William Bush, Archibald Kennedy, and Horatio Hornblower, undress."
"Midshipman Horatio Hornblower, undress."
"Captain Jack Aubrey, undress."

"Judges, you may begin judging. Try not to drool too much."

*waves hello*

I know it's not the folks you wanted, but if it's any help:
some uniforms screencaps. The ones with Rear Admiral Leighton demonstrate, I think, that the uniform can still looks sexy even when the chap inside it doesn't ;-)

Apologies for the poor quality - the film's been taped from TV (onto VHS), then transferred to DVD. But hey, at leats I have a copy :-)

Does it matter? Norrington makes it pretty!

Ah well, here we have more:

Commodore Pellew
Captain Pellew and Horatio
Captain Pellew and whee Mid Horatio
Captain Pellew and whee Mid Horatio
Captain Horatio
Lt. Hornblower in full UNdress

I should've some pics of Norrington in his Captain uniform (i.e. his non-dress uniform)... lemme know if interested.
