I'm exploding from cute and from broadway/moviemusical geekery and from OMFG HOLY GUH.

and here's the thing about Bale's performance.

while yes it slayed me, and yes he's outstanding with the dancing and really, really he's a physical actor ... or no. I mean, not the sort that talks with his hands, because... he doesn't. but when you get him moving... he's so active. fights and chases and dances he just moves so well. and we know that. he's really physical. so, I love to see him do the fights and dances and all, because he knows how to move so well. dude knows his body. knows its limits, and knows how to push them. and does push them. and it's fantastic.

but what you can see also, er, what I can see, because I'm looking for it, is that there are a lot of stretches where he's obviously unsure. dude, understandably unsure, because it is (one of?) his first in Hollywood. when he really gets into a scene, or a song, or a move, it's great. he's great. but a lot of times here I can see he's not quite into it. not quite there. like, in the first song, his ensemble dancing. I was watching that, and I thought, "there's something wrong with this" ... he seemed... unprofessional. hell, I'm not gonna fault him for that, cause kid was 16 at the time and really hadn't had the same dance experience the others had. but his difference was ... um, different. I realized what it was a few minutes later, when his acting was rubbing me wrong. when he's not just chill and into it, he acts/dances/sings/moves like he's at an audition. I'm not critical of it! like I said -- he's the new kid in Hollywood. at this point. and the scenes when he's really able to get into his own, it's incredible. he's awesome. but sometimes, kinda often, when he lets himself get out of it a little, he moves a little too much. talks a little too sharply. overdoes it, just a little. doesn't quite match his moves to his stature. which is kind of, maybe the visualization of culture shock. just a little.
