I...

my mother just told me she pulled all-nighters in graduate school.
I mean, if you know my mother, which you don't, but ok, her big college story is "I got a C in PoliSci and almost had a breakdown." she's really... intense about college. not so much grade school, but college -- definitely. and it's one of those things that's been freaking me out. because the last thing I want is to go home for winter, and be all happy-enough with my grades, knowing the rough spots I worked through &c, and face her ... well, not quite disappointment, but that sort of acceptance-because-she-can't-do-anything-else (me, my mother, my schooling: the great Triangle of Fuckedupitude).

but tonight on the phone she asked me, "so how's your last final paper coming?" and I told her honestly, I only had the outline done, and she laughed (as in amiably) and comiserated about all-nighters (which, by the way, this is not, but that's not the point).

so yeah, I'm pretty floored. since when was my mother human?

Heh. I never pulled an all nightter in school, then I dropped out anyway. All my all nighters involve either driving or reading. The driving ones used to be coming home from performances hundreds of miles away and going to work. The reading ones can be mostly blamed on Lois McMaster Bujold and Kristine Smith. Nowadays, I can't pull an all nighter and go to work (driving a city bus on no sleep is a truly not going there thing), so somewhere around 5am, I call in sick and keep reading.
