so, it's that time of morning again, when Mel rolls around for the last time, jumps crankily out of bed, screams: "FUCKING HELL!", braids her hair in pigtails, and gives up on sleeping... yet again.

really, I'm getting so sick of this.

I've learned the hard way that, despite what I might insist, I just do not function at full capacity once I've been up and around for more than 18, 20 hours solid. my brain gets gummy. as well it should. and yanno what, I have THINGS TO DO today. spring cleaning. anthro ... thingy. rereading Beowulf so I'm not dredging my backbrain during class. reading that STUPID "family systems" book mum's been on my ass about, and also doing laundry. so, skipping the "full night's sleep" part of my schedule? NOT COOL SHIT, KIDS. NOT COOL AT ALL. grr.

so ok though. while it probably won't help me this morning or LAST NIGHT, ffr I'd like to know what, if anything, you guys and dolls do to lose consciousness once your head's hit the pillow. the only thing I've got for certain, for myself, is that red meat puts me out like a light, but yeah I really don't want to be chowing down on some manner of beef ... um, ever, much less right before bed. it does work, though. I know [livejournal.com profile] tyrstains (at least I think it was [livejournal.com profile] tyrstains; I could be wrong; I don't exactly trust my memory right now) mentioned something about how people who exercise regularly tend to fall asleep more quickly. that's good; that's another thing to push me toward daily workouts which I also need to do because I SUCK. anyway. since I am >THIS< close to just going and getting a scrip for sleeping pills, and I don't want to do that because I'm on enough schedule 2 drugs already, uh. where was I? oh.

anyone got any 'tricks of the trade' for getting to sleep? because man, I'm willing to try just about anything right now. except that beef thing, because that's just nasty.

yeah.

[this post's quota of randomness: LOOK! ICON! how many doctors can you name?]

umm... hot chocolate?

The main thing for me is for my body & brain to be equally tired, so I always have to make sure I do a reasonable amount of exercise during the day (proportionatly to what I eat) and that I use my brain actively - often done by reading something non-fiction in the evening.

You knew all that already though didn't you.

I don't know what else. Clearing my head of all the crap that's swooshing round in it is a fair priority for me the last few days. Anything I want to say to people, I write it down then the next day I can choose whether I show it them or not, but I don't have to remember what it was...

Bah. Kinda pointless & useless comment this was, eh?

*hugs*

ugh, that sucks. the only thing that works for me when I'm having trouble sleeping is read a book, take some nyquil and a drink a glass of whole milk. *shrug*

and I can name all the doctors, but I won't. :P

Yep, that was me who said that! It certainly works for me, that's for sure. I've been an athlete my whole life and I've never had any prolonged sleeping issues. Exercising gives me a regular sleeping schedule and lately I've been waking up at 7am on the dot, mere seconds before my alarm.

But if I ever have trouble falling asleep, reading for a while until my eyes get heavy is a surefire way to get to sleep. It also helps to have a semi-relaxing routine before you go to bed so your brain isn't all awake or jumpy when you hit the sack. I'm not a big fan of eating or drinking before bedtime (I make it a rule not to eat past 7 or 7:30pm-- anything you eat just turns into fat when you sleep anyways), but I have had non-caffeinated tea in the past. My dad is a bit of an insomniac and his problem is that he just can't turn his brain off and stop thinking about things, so I think what would help would be to focus on clearing your mind of possible worries and axieties and put them off till the morning.

Good luck!

I can't remember the last time I've had to use a "trick of the trade" to get to sleep (I run myself ragged, and then tend to collapse into unconsciousness anymore - not what I'm recommendning), but when I did, warm milk with a dab of honey.

Or, Celestial Seasonings makes this Sleepytime tea that's pretty good - I'm usually ready to sleep about an hour after having some, no matter how awake I was before. It even tastes good. You can probably get some at your local grocery store in the tea section.

*flails and squees at yer icon XD They look so cute!!!!*

And on a sleeping note... I recently discovered the serious good points of, well, sleep. After one of those deadline overnighters, my brain was dead. I wanted to draw something because I had just a bit of free time... but head. dead. One sleep later I went for a short walk and blam! Ideas were pouring out like...er... something liquid.

As to how to sleep... a good hot shower always does it for me. You feel warm, clean, and you MAY feel rejuvinated for a couple of minutes, but trust me, twenty minutes later you are snoring.

Well, at least it works for me/

Umm, I'm probably not going to say anything that hasn't already been said, but here goes:

[livejournal.com profile] tyrstains is right, I believe- people who exercise regularly do tend to have more regular sleep patterns. You're also NOT supposed to exercise within like, four or six hours (I forget which) before going to bed. For some reason, it's supposed to prevent you from falling asleep easily. But I've personally never had a problem with that.

Sometimes I drink herbal tea before I go to bed after staying up way late. I've never really noticed it making me sleepy (I also really hate chammomile tea, which is what's supposed to make you sleepy, so I never drink it), but it relaxes my mind at least.

Also, I don't know if you tend to sit on your bed a lot during the day (ie when you're not trying to fall asleep), but you should only use your bed for sleep and sex. I know I'm horrible about this- I always sit on my bed when I'm trying to read stuff. But I've read in a bunch of places that not sitting on your bed during the day programs your brain so that, when you finally do hit the sack, it knows that it's bedtime. If you sit on your bed during the day, your brain gets mixed signals and doesn't know whether it's time to shut down for the night or not.

That's what I know/read. I myself tend to have sleep issues sometimes, but I think mine tend to be more stress-related- I get so freaked out about something that it basically plays on repeat in my mind and I can't fall asleep and drive myself crazy. :P
