disclaimer: this "open letter"/rant contains PotC: DMC spoilers, language of which your grandmother would not approve, crankiness, bitchiness, and a lot of capital letters.

disclaimer 2: I've been cleaning hotel rooms all day.

dear Pirates people:

I love you. I do. I have the hugest love for PotC fandom and PotC fanpeople. but HONESTLY. now it is time to get your HEADS out of your ASSES and GROW UP. I know this kind of shit happened in HP fandom with book 6. and in DC comic fandom, anything referring to an issue less than six months old gets a spoiler warning. spoilers are a big, bad, nasty issue, all across the wide wide world of fandom. I respect that. to a point.

but SERIOUSLY. WHAT THE HELL. are all the "James goes pirate" fics now spoilery? or the "Will and Elizabeth get married" ones? because I DON'T KNOW ABOUT YOU, BUT I AM IN FACT NOT PSYCHIC. I do not want to be walking on eggshells when/if I write something before July 7 because MAYBE I'll have some WILD IDEA that I DID NOT KNOW WAS A SPOILER and then I'll get spoiled when someone gets in a tizzy about it (clearly, after July 7 I'll know full well what's a spoiler, as I'll've seen the movie).

however, on the other hand? if someone does spoil me? yeah, it'll kinda suck, maybe. but you know, I also know it's JUST A MOVIE. so also, I DON'T CARE. and will soon be OVER IT. because hey, you know what? I'm actually a fan of... Pirates. and that whole... piratey PotC thing. oddly, I am not solely a fan of plot twists. and if I were, I would not get my plot-twist fix from PotC. because ok. anyone who watches a DISNEY. SWASHBUCKLING. DISNEY MOVIE for the PLOT TWISTS can go get his/her BRAIN checked for shipworm.

yeah, that was a spoiler. suck it up. there are more important things in life.

affectionately,
Mel

(p.s. to anyone who may be tempted to take this rant totally seriously: don't. I'm throwing an LJ temper tantrum. it's fucking therapeutic, bitch)

What, do they seriously think that the pirate!Norrington and wedding pictures are STILL spoilers? Hello?! YOU'RE PUBLISHING THEM! It's in the damn trailer! There was a BEHIND THE SCENES SPECIAL.

Er, dunno if this is exactly what you meant, but...yeah, just had to get that out.

some people are choosing not to look at those. technically, as they're references *to* the film without *being* the film, they are spoilers. so yeah. I think ... but I'm notoriously bad with the whole *concept* of spoilers. XD

Plot twists suck. Unless they don't.

I'm sorry if you feel this way, but moderating a group of 1200 people includes trying to keep things spoiler-free for those who are rabid about it, despite my personal feelings. It isn't a huge thing to request that such things be given a warning, such as "Warning: Possible Spoiler for DMC" and be put behind a cut. This is the way spoilers for multiple-film fandoms have been handled in every community and mailing list I've been on in fandom for a great many years, and I would consider myself remiss if I didn't request such a small consideration for others in the community. It is simply good manners.

hey, I totally get where you're coming from and as mod of such a large and central group, it makes sense. but, yanno, just about everything is a double-edged sword, so there'll be casualties any way you slice it. *shrug* sucks, but that's life. personally, I could care less about most spoilers, but I know there are a lot of people going to great pains to remain totally spoiler-free, and I wouldn't want to destroy their experiences just because of a little laziness/carelessness.

Thanks luv. It really isn't easy at all but in the case of the comm, I have to put aside my personal feelings and try to think for the good of all the members. I just figured it is easier to err on the side of caution in this. Me? I eat spoilers for breakfast and already have the storybook, so you know where I'm coming from. *G* I just wish folks would understand that, in a small group, things can be more flexible, but when you are trying to keep almost 1200 people happy, it's not a personal attack to ask for warnings. It's the easiest way to let people know that there might be spoiler-issues. Some folks really do get rabid about it and I can understand their point. It is a fine line, but I had take into consideration that the comm is likely to gain new members once the movie is released who might not be aware that it doesn't open everywhere at the same time. Not the easiest task in the world and certainly no popularity contest!

And I really commisserate cleaning motel rooms! UGH! I did that for 2 summers between HS and college and hated every second of it! You have my sympathies! LOL!

Dude, if it's in the trailer, it's not a spoiler. That's just my 2 cents anyway. *shrug*

That said, I know that there's a huge bootstrap arc that is NOT in the trailer and very few people know about. I don't know what it is and I DON'T WANT TO until I see it. But Pirate!Norrington? Come ON.
