Squee 1 - Charlie used to help build boats!!!! and do fluid dynamics!!!!

Anti squee 1 - though i was somewhat offended by his later implication that it wasn't as important/interesting/challenging as what he does now. How could *anything be more interesting than Navier-Stokes?!?!?! But then I remembered that I'm biased. And that I'm not a genius...

(And I was wishing like crazy that Charlie would actually say something concrete about fluid dynamics but he never did. Likewise, I was ready to pounce on any specific tide/current/wind refs which did not happen.) Hubby and I though, when we heard the 68 gallons of fuel and got a quick look at that chart, immediately said to each other - that boat never made it that far - which was immediately echoed by Charlie...

There were a couple of things that Charlie was totally off on, though.

1) Yes, those boats can tear themselves apart due to design problems. But far more likely is that someone screwed up the manufacture which Charlie somehow dismissed in some statistics. Ehhh?

2) a boat that is designed to be perfectly aerodynamic on the surface of the water is far more unpredictable when totally immersed. so his explanation to the goons NSA was not exactly right. Yes it would go farther than the search was looking, maybe. Depending on how/why it went down which was never really determined. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, though. He was dumbing down for the goons.

3) Generally, those kinds of sailboats *require 4-5 crew because under sail with any kind of wind - the crew are *ballast and prevent the boat from getting blown over. Now it is very likely that if the iwnds were light or he was trying to limp somewhere under power, then yes by all means get rid of the crew...

4) NO FREAKING WAY a sailboat that costs millions and is in an international race could possibly be carrying that much extra cargo without it being noticed.
