THE DECEMBERISTS FINALLY CAME TO MILWAUKEE. AND I WAS THERE. RIGHT UP FRONT. AND IT. KICKED. ASS.

most of the set songs were from The Crane Wife which, I am ashamed to say, I had not heard before one of our group brought it to listen to in the car. although my sister and I agreed that this may in fact be all for the best, because now, whenever we listen to those songs from The Crane Wife, we will think of the live performance and it will be that much closer to the surfaces of our minds.

along with the newer songs, they also played "Song for Myla Goldberg" and "Legionnaire's Lament", both of which I know and adore. the whole thing was pretty much one big happy singalong, with Colin directing the audience in some mid-show calisthenics (he made us get DOWN ON THE FLOOR, THE GROSS ICKY FLOOR, but I did it. I did it OUT OF LOVE). then they finished the set with a very moving "Sons and Daughters", sung for the victims and families of this morning's Virginia Tech shooting. hearing that last long chorus ("Here all the bombs fade away" x20) rising up from a sold-out theater, all of us singing our hearts out, was beautiful, and just a little precious shine of love and hope in a world where, sometimes, the violence is all we see.

then they played "The Mariner's Revenge Song" for an encore. ROCK. ON!

that is all.
