shit, fondant is a motherfucking sonuvabitch.

'clockwork cookies' decoration test run - fondant only

Photobucket
the carnage on my cutting board (wrapped in plastic*, thank god)

Photobucket
the assembly pan. more carnage.

Photobucket
money shot.

hopefully I can get these under control and get the rest of my shit together in time for them to be a contribution to the bakesale at wiscon.

though I may kill myself before I finish that final batch. this is fucking finicky work.

*(yes, I linked to a youtube of Pete's line in Twin Peaks. every time I say the phrase "wrapped in plastic" it's still what sticks in my head. she's deeaad. wraaapped in plaastic.)

[ETA: hey success! properly bonded and with just a little bit of time to set, the entire faux-clockwork shenanigan can be carefully lifted and moved! this means I will not have to build it all on top of each cookie. \o/!!!]

oooh, but it's really tasty. the fondant is lightly flavored with anise and I'm going to make the cookies from my favorite flake family old-world cutout cookie recipe :D

way too fucking long, but surprisingly, not as long as I thought it was going to take! (especially since it was my first time working with fondant, so there was a lot of trial and error involved.) I made a marshmallow fondant, and from melting the marshmallows through to taking the pictures and cleanup it was about an hour and a half, two hours in all.

Really? When I was making my cake in baking class, we had to let our fondant dry overnight before painting it. It took SUCH a looong time to do all the fondant work for it. >_

hahahaaaa, I should theoretically have let the fondant chill in the fridge overnight to get the appropriate smoothness, so I hear. but I had no trouble with it. then again the only painting bits were the black marks on the clock and, of course, the luster dust (ngl, I get the impression that the luster dust would DEFINITELY have liked me more if I had let the whole deal dry a little).

idk, for this application not drying it (especially overnight) was probably the best. the whole setup is thin and by this morning the gears were getting a little unfavorably crunchy. cakes are a different beast altogether, though.

hiya. i'm thinking of friending you, if you don't mind.

and yes, i'm doing it solely on the basis of your comment to [livejournal.com profile] maple_mahogany on her 'when brendon met spencer' cos i thought 'YES! exactly! THAT is what i love about her writing!'.

the fact you are friends with [livejournal.com profile] katilara also is a point in your favour.

hope that's ok. please feel free to friend back if you so desire.
