1: I'm looking at ideas for a new icon. Maybe out of the pictures I took. Much as I absolutely -adore- this one, and it makes me feel all happy and special and *squee* and makes me think happy thoughts of late January, I'm feeling like it might be time for a change. Hm. We'll see. I'm at least working on collecting/making/whatever iconnage to fill up the open spaces on my paid lj (i.e. fic lj)... so yeah.

2: Heard Dido's "Sand in my Shoes" on the radio last night, and got SERIOUS PtT plot-arc ideas. I mean, run-into-Viv's-room, scrawl-madly-on-legal-pad type plot arc ideas. Writing, consider thyself facilitated. I know where my story's goin'! ...It'll just take me 8 bajillion years to get it there.
(for special psychic preview of Way In The Future of PtT, give "Sand in my Shoes" a listen. no spoilers, just teasers, which you'll only get if you listen real careful and think real hard. actually, you probably won't, except Eliz, who knows a Special Plot Point... but listen anyway, 'cuz it's a VeryGoodSong)

3: Laptop still hasn't come yet. But that's to be expected. I mean, the guy did say it would be 1-2 weeks. But when it does come... mi vida sera buena. (yeah spanglish sin acentos XP)

4: Spent a lot of today griping and b**ching about Sam, again. It would appear Aquafina's in the play, now, as our Flute dropped. So did our Snout, and Snug, and maybe even a few others. Don't know. But it was fun, chatting with Aquafina (who actually wasn't SuperQuiet, which is cool) and watching Pidge run through his "I Am The Ruler of the Queen's Nayvee" for HMS Pinafore (yes, that's how they spell it). My little brother is First Lord of the Admiralty! *ish so proud* ...And yanno, even snarking at Jesse was fun. Love that kid, even though he's a Jim Carrey maniac, and I can't -stand- the man. Also ran Megs' lines with her, and snarked at her for messing up the iambic pentameter by adding random words. She said she didn't care. I wanted to throttle her.

5: Came home to a letter in the mailbox... from Bowdoin. It was rather thin... I almost cried; I was so sure it was a rejection letter. Opened it-- "Congratulations, Melody..." So yeah, squee, I'm flyin' to Maine! Now if I can get a similar letter from UA... *hopehopecrossfingersHailMary*

...*yawn*

Em and I had an argument about language. Or rather, she said something, and I chased her around the senior room trying to argue my point while she laughed at me. Well... you don't go and tell -M that we're limited by language. You just. Don't. (becauseshewillchaseyouaroundtheseniorroomandmakesureyouknowthetruth) Language is our only freedom. It's not perfect, but without it we're screwed. Anyone seen the movie Iris? Dame Judi Dench and Jim Broadbent? It was what... last year? Year before? I think perhaps the year before last, yes. Anyway, Iris Murdoch on language is enthralling.

...*yawn-yawn*
nightynight, y'all. Drop me lines, yeah?

Em

I'm not freakin' saying that language is a bad thing! I AM saying that it is limited, in some cases severely.

If you want an example, take the Apocalypse. Poor St. John saw this incredible vision, and he had to put it into words. Because of the limitation of language, the Book of Revelation is vague, to say the least. He had to put everything into material terms. Did he really see "four horsemen"? Were the flames associated with "wormwood" really the flames from the Chernobyl meltdown? We don't know. All we have to go with is a book full of abstract, wonderful, and sometimes downright terrifying images. Because of St. John's close relationship with Christ, we can conclude that what he wrote in the Apocalypse is true. But it remains one of the most disputed books in history.

I'm not trying to sound heretical here, and if I do sound that way, I apologize to whoever might be offended. But you see my point.

That's not a problem with language - that's a problem of the person's experience being insufficient to describe what they saw... Plus, of course, a the bajillion translations, misspellings, etc.

Interestingly, they were going on about the English language on They Think It's All Over (silly sports quiz show) last night. Ended up with Rory McGrath concluding English is better than French because "it has this je ne sais quoi". *giggle* Very silly programme, but I don't imagine you guys get it over your way...

Yay Tigg. Though there is also the truth that trying to tue temporal, human ideas to descrie God and His ways is like trying to hold light in a sieve. But yes.

Oh, well that sounds super fun. Makes me again dislike American programming... ergh. See, you guys over there get all the -good- stuff. We're stuck with... Fear Factor and Joe Millionaire.
ICK.

I don't know that the issue here is with experience. St. John had a LOT of experience with the supernatural, seeing as he was Jesus'closest disciple.

Yeah British programming is awesome. I watched this Britcom the other night on PBS with my family. It was SO funny!... don't remember what it was called. The guy who plays Rimmer on Red Dwarf was a defendant in a murder case. There were all these things that pointed to him being a homicidal maniac who dealt drugs, but really he was just a clumsy character whose enemies liked to put glue on things that he touched. One of those things was a chainsaw. You can figure it out from there.

lol, there's a lot of crap on British telly as well. Far too much reality TV stuff - and remember, we're the country who gave the world Pop Idol, Who Wants to be a Millionaire and The Weakest Link.

But then you find a little gem like My Life in Film which was on last night...

Ok, ok, ok. I never said you said language was a bad thing. Goodness me, girlie.

I. Agree. With. You.
Just not with the way you expressed your point before First Lunch.

And did you even perchance read item 5? I would've thought you'd be excited.

I was trying to make a point about language! The thing about you going to Bowdoin, well, that was almost a given in my mind. I knew it wasn't certain, but dang it girl, you're so freakin' smart. And your mum's right, they'll fall in love with you once they meet you.

1. Nice idea! Well, I've had a lj-icon with my own self on it, but it's kinda terrible for me to look at myself every day, so I took this lovely Sparrington icon instead! :) And currently I'm thinking of getting a paid account so that I can use lots and lots of icons at the same time... Well - maybe I'll do that.

2. Bet I will listen to that song! I've just ordered it. Maybe I can see what you saw, too. But I guess I can't. ;) Anyway, maybe it gives me some inspiration, too! Will post the first chapter of my fic later, by the way. :)

3. It really makes life easier to have a laptop - and I know that, have shared a computer with my brother for quite a long time (about 5 years) and it was terrible.

4. *considers she doesn't understand this and moves to the next paragraph*

5. Congratulations! Hope you enjoy Maine! And I keep my fingers crossed for you!

6. And I have to see this movie "Iris". I've heard about it but I didn't manage to watch it in the cinema. But after all, it's a movie called like me, so this actually is reason enough to see it. *gg*
