So here's the plan.
I'm going to study like possessed for this econ exam, finish the editing for Tem's vid, and pretend I'm notdrowning in guilt worrying about how my family's actually paying for food and heating back home.
Now would be a really good time for Dad to get that job. A job. Some job...please.

Don't saddle yourself with guilt over how your family's coping financially while you're away at Uni - it will only drag you down & your work may suffer. < /big-sisterly-styley voice of experience >

Date: 2005-11-16 09:21 pm (UTC)The pay sucks (only starting at $7 per hour) but it's pay all the same. I started working there after I was laid off for the 3rd time in 9 years from an office job. I decided then and there that maybe retail was where it was at.
Now, I'm being asked to promote to a Team Lead position. It pays better (between $10 and $15 per hour) but it's still retail and hours, especially going into Christmas, are awful. But the Team Leads have slightly better choices in hours.
After 6 months of employment, as long as he's full time, he can chose which of Target's five benefits plans he wants to be a part of. If your Dad has a college degree he can even apply for a store Executive Team Lead (ETL)position. One must have a degree to become an ETL, and since I don't, a Team Lead position is the best I can hope for if I stay.
Try to fend off those guilt feelings, love. You're in school for a reason. Just as I tell my 13 year old as he got mouthy about school and wanting to get a job himself to make money, I told him, "You're in school now and are going to college so that SOME DAY when you're looking for a REAL job, you won't be 42 years old and making $7 per hour." *points at myself*
Yup, I was encouraging him to be better than what I've been left with. I think every parent wants better for their kids, yours too. Mine too!
Fortunately for me, my husband makes a pretty good wage in his job.. still, it's tight.
Hang in there kiddo!
