going to the midnight showing of Dead Man's Chest was definitely one of the better decisions I've made in my lifetime. as threatened, I attended in full costume, from my very Sparrowish brown tricorne down to the tip-toes of my fabulous pirate boots. accompanying me were Pidge and [livejournal.com profile] i_puddleglum, the latter in a lovely lavender top with matching Piratey Bandana and wielding an 100% authentic plastic toy cutlass. I should have taken pictures, but we haven't a clue where the camera is.

I've always believed fandom is/should be all about love and let me tell you I was definitely feeling the love last night. sitting in one of four sold-out showings, surrounded by stripes and patches and Jolly Rogers, and people who would shout, "YARR!" as soon as cheer when the theater attendant came out at 11:59, I was just about bursting with the pure joy of fandom. it was a true reminder, after all the wank and un-wank that's been tailing me throughout the past year, of what being a fan with other fans is really about. and it is totally about love. it's about dropping your guard and letting yourself feel ridiculously happy. and ridiculously excited. and just... ridiculous. it's about running across the front of the theater with a huge Jolly Roger flag flapping behind you. it's about squealing loudly and without remorse when the clip of Jack's grin plays in the Marcus Cinemas intro. it's about laughing until you ache and your eyes are watering, forgetting to breathe until the sword-fight is over, leaping up and applauding when the end credits start rolling, waiting impatiently for the 'easter egg' clip at the end. and doing it all without a hint of apology, because we're PIRATES FANS! THIS IS OUR NIGHT!! and it's beautiful.

as for the movie itself, I was floored. completely and utterly -- that is a good film! I can honestly say I feel it topped the original film in several areas. I fell in love with the cinematography at the opening sequence, and just kept loving harder and harder as the film went on. and the soundtrack! oh, guh. if anyone wants it, I've uploaded a .rar file here. I thought the writing was better, the character development was fantastic, the complexity and depth with which CotBP flirted but frankly didn't have the time to really run came out here and was just thrilling. T&T took the plunge and reallly played with their characters, flinging gobs of internal conflict all over the place, getting serious with the repercussions of Jack's escape, addressing the "end of an era" time-setting and making the audience realize this isn't all fun and games (the whole creepy-ass Davy Jones Flying Dutchman thing didn't weaken that campaign, either). at the same time, though, they turn around and just embrace with open arms the crazy ridiculous tone that Depp's Jack Sparrow set, and things are over the top and in-jokes and absurd/hilarious/ZOMBIE MONKEY! and that dichotomy is absolutely what I love about Pirates; it's what makes PotC completely nuts and completely ingenious and completely perfect for the realm of fanfic (which, don't get me started on how many times my fanfic-radar went 'Ping!' it was a lot) and just fandom overall. it's interpersonal and serious, and then it's SO NOT. it's historical and serious, AND THEN IT'S SO NOT! LOOK, TIA DALMA! IT'S AN UNDEAD MONKEY! (lol zombies+Naomie Harris)

aand, as my brain appears to be rapidly disintegrating (it's a wonder I've made it this far, actually), I will assure readers that I've spent time crying out both, "oh, Jamie! poor you!" and, "oh god Jamie, what the hell!" and that I am reserving any further written contemplation of the situation for after a second, more critical, viewing.

(fortunately, on the Norrington front, the OTP chemistry is still going strong -- sparks were flying! -- and the wee!OTP (i.e. Psalms to the Taffrail youngsters) has gotten nothing but stronger. OHO, YES! WIN!)

so, um... is it next July yet?
no, wait. I want to play with this one :D *looking forward to the year ahead*

[ETA: ok looking at my mood icon just made me *whimper*. OH, JAMIE! ;A; ]

I'm always working on Psalms... just not always very efficiently. *shame* I'm going to need to reread it and all to get back into the swing of things, but I'm definitely planning to put in some serious work on it, and soon. especially with such an awesomely encouraging cheerleader! <3 thxu
