memeity meme memeitude!

[personal profile] sasha_feather gave me the color blue.

in other news, i've been -- for no one specific reason, but indeed rather mysteriously -- craving a trip out to washington, d.c. i'm thinking probably mid-to-late july-ish, when i'm finally done paying off my debt. ideas? offers of couch? i cook and i clean and i'm well behaved. i even cover entire walls in chalk art, if requested -- you can just ask [personal profile] momebie!

i registered for wiscon! finally! woo!

& lastly, i think i might be allergic to eggs. suddenly. and surprisingly. all i know is i broke out in hives at work yesterday, and the only thing i did out of the ordinary was to eat bowl of egg-drop soup. obviously i'm going to seek the opinion of an actual doctor, but in the meantime D: my life.

i need to be kinder.

not that i've become any sort of mean, but radical kindness used to be my m.o., and i've noticed myself fading away from that -- becoming quicker to judge (or really, judging at all); sharper of tongue; and generally breeding energies that are not as fully positive as the ones that i really should be adding to the world.

saw kittie tonight and met some genuinely sweet metal fans. headbanged a little. left early (wish i hadn't).

then i went to a drag show and experienced a lot of cliquishness and cattiness.

i know exactly which of the two i prefer, any day, ever.

this is my recommitment to love and joy.

themeletor: close-up of a cupcake in the grass against a blue sky (Default)
hah, my subconscious.

let's start this story by saying i'm really bad at knowing what day it is. like, all the time. day of the week, date, whatever; all i've got is a tenuous grasp on which job i'm supposed to attend, and possibly when, and the rest is gravy & bananas.

so i did not know today was march 11th until, oh, twenty minutes ago? when i was checking my flist.

my subconscious, however, TOTALLY DID because last night i had a dream that lush ran out of all their limited edition maple leaf soaps and canadiana gift sets, and for some reason in my dream this BROKE MY HEART, and i woke up in such distress that i hopped online and stocked up. because they're on clearance, for like half off, and also i will probably need a bunch for, like, gifts, you know? and also because OMG MOUNTIE MASSAGE BAR, and fucking MAPLE SYRUP SOAP.

so if you want to get in on any of this, you know, you can check out the sale at lush online. or you can just ask me. because i am going to have a lot.

and that* is how i spent my 11th of march.

*along with working 12 hours and scalding my wrist, blargh.

i finally cued up an episode of white collar (episode 10, "vital signs", for those who are curious), and couldn't even wait to make it all the way through to say this:

this is one of the most ridiculous, incohesive, hand-wavey and DID I MENTION RIDICULOUS shows i have ever enjoyed, and that "ever" includes 21st-century merlin. but goddamnit, i am a little bit charmed. fuck.

(seriously, logic holes THE SIZE OF MY ARM, and i'm still watching this shit. that's ... that's something, is what it is.)
themeletor: close-up of a cupcake in the grass against a blue sky (Default)
oh, my. i didn't even know that last post had, well ... posted. as far as i was aware i hung up on it while it was loading. woo, posts made from the cellophone while falling asleep; good times. thank you to everyone who commented! the dance was the futterwhacken, spelling perhaps variable.

(also, this is in fact the first time i've been to a proper computer since my second-to-last post. busybusy.)

your random fact for the day: i appear to have begun wearing lipstick semi-regularly - sephora rouge in r23 crush, which wears, on me, as a deep-lush-bright rock'n'roll pink. mostly i like the way it makes my lipring stand out. ... i think spring just turns me into a fucking girl.

saw tim burton's alice in in disney 3d tonight. um, it was amazing. i mean, not the world's most thoughtful or groundbreaking movie? but it was fucking pretty. and a really good time. which is exactly what i wanted.

what was the name of that crazy dance?

hello internet friends*!

it's been a while. again.

... apparently when this disk drive is ripping a cd it sounds like it is going to take off. or blow up. i feel like the former would be more fun.

~

so today i may have gained the nickname "captain tinytits, intrepid explorer of vaginaland". i mean, that was a good time. i haven't decided yet whether i prefer it to "mellybean", which was the previous nickname.

and in actually strangely related news, i am approaching something of a facebook rubicon, in that my cousin has requested my facebook friendification. now i'm not one of those people who doesn't like family on facebook, BUT. my facebook page is pretty gay. about as gay as i am. and i'm not going to change a word of it. AND i haven't technically come out to my extended family (though i wouldn't be surprised to hear they'd figured it out with the power of their very own minds). it isn't something i'm afraid to do; it's just never come up. which is to say that it's never come up because it's been deftly avoided on both sides, to be honest. my thinking has always been that it's irrelevant until there's someone in my life who's important enough to attend an extended family event (weddings, holidays, et cetera) with me, at which point not only will the situation be apparent, but the answer to the unasked question will be concrete. and standing next to me. annnnd i'm not worried in either the hypothetical future event or the present circumstance of rejection or backlash (except how apparently i am, a little bit, because there is this whole reluctance and discussion going on) but it is, again, well. a rubicon.

so there's that. i mean, i'm going to friend her. and my facebook isn't going to get any less gay. but i just felt like rambling about that shit for a while. good times!

~

in other news, i have a date tomorrow. to the art museum and then to dinner, like an actual honest-to-goodness predictably-shaped date. will let you know how that goes, and possibly even in a timely fashion. who knows!

~

i closed the restaurant tonight, which means i drank a cup of coffee around 8 pm. so if the sleeping pills don't kick in soon, i'll be spending the wee hours catching up on livejournal and dreamwidth. prepare for random comments!

xo, mel

*i am certain that "internet friends" is a misnomer, here, because the vast majority of you are well beyond the category of internet friends, and have been pretty much since i met you. which may or may not have been on the internet (but was almost positively because of the internet). ♥

hello the internet.

hello new friends.

hello snowstorm.

fwiw, have returned safely and mostly intact from the faraway land of canadia. am still riding the high of the stunning, wonderful wedding but at the same time (and despite sleeping until 3:00 this afternoon, roughly, with sporadic blinks of dw/lj-checking awakeness) thoroughly exhausted -- though feeling significantly less like i just got hit by a train full of cake. also i miss many, many people, as is habitual with these things.

(i was technically open for a shift at the coop today. hah. looked out the window this morning at eight inches of snow still accumulating, breathed a hopeful intention that those still in transit made it safely to various homespaces, put my pillow over my head and went back to sleep. fuck that.)

to my new friends, welcome! i ... do not post very often. when i do i am largely boring. when i am not boring i am a bit of a spaz. ALSO I SOMETIMES POST FOOD PICTURES AND RECIPES. in the real world i'm a waitress at some fake asian restaurant and a demo/promo/samples coordinator at a natural foods coop, so those keep me pretty busy six days out of the week. but i do my best to check dw and lj at least every couple of days, even if by the time i do that i don't always have the energy to comment. (my new years resolution was to comment more. i don't want to talk about how badly that is coming along.) i continue to live in the probably vain hope that some day i will have gobs and gobs of free time to spend being an active member of the online comminuty again, but until that day i just try to keep ahead of the rolling boulder that is my life.

to everybody, i love you!

and i'm going back to bed now.

(ps holy shit but that wedding was AWESOME. like, EPIC. have i mentioned that?)

(pps FINALLY got all the icing out of my hair! pants, however, are another matter entirely.)
themeletor: close-up of a cupcake in the grass against a blue sky (Default)
okay. fuck whatever my last post was.

unacceptable shit has, once again, gone down (link to goes to [personal profile] commodorified's journal, because it's the post and the link i found first) and ... i am not a words person. and i am not terribly awake. so i'm not going to write a pretty post about some terribly ugly stuff (others have; or rather they have written rightly and accordingly ugly accounts of ugly things, and more eloquently than i could pull off), but i will say this:

if you haven't heard about Dr. Peter Watts' experience with officials at the US/Canada border, do. read. look it up ... i don't know. it's probably all over the internet right now. and then make noise.

why? i mean, people are quite good at being nasty. it's not the first bout of unacceptable behavior, and it certainly won't be the last. but if there's one thing i've grown certain of and believe in above all things it's that while each hand is small, and some problems are very very big, with enough small hands (and small voices, and big hearts) -- well, we might not do everything, but we will do something.

(i don't know why this got me talking when, like i said, it's by far not the first episode of entirely unacceptable behavior i've heard about or that i've had the opportunity to talk about. there's no way it'll be the last. but for once i'm not going to sit on my hands and hide behind being busy with work (and this and that and the other thing) and trusting in the many others and wondering about what-good-will-my-words-be, convinced of my own redundancy. i'm dipping my little teaspoon into the ocean, and i hope with all my heart it's not just to make myself feel better.

i don't know, maybe it is. fuck it, i'm doing it anyway.)
themeletor: close-up of a cupcake in the grass against a blue sky (Default)
so.

i may have just signed up for next month's "half-and-half" night (half guest performers, half regular cast) with a local drag king troupe (this one - goes to a myspace page; no guarantees on worksafeness [as usual, it depends on your workplace, i guess]).

we'll see how that pans out, and whether i actually wind up on stage, but. i am REALLY REALLY EXCITED.

over & out.
themeletor: close-up of a cupcake in the grass against a blue sky (Default)
so i am very sleepy (very sleepy - free hot spiced rum cider makes for a cuddly world and a happy, snoozy mel), but i want to record for posterity the excitement of today. i had considered interpretive dance, but then decided a post would be a much more efficient use of the small amount of time before i roll into bed.

numbered, with asterisk-based footnotes! )

also MY MOM GAVE ME A SAINT NICHOLAS STOCKING! it's a ziploc sandwich bag FULL OF CLEMENTINES. and a candy cane. with a note that says "this is a stocking". i love my mom. <333333333333
themeletor: close-up of a cupcake in the grass against a blue sky (Default)
not dead!

i came home from vacation to dive face-first into a) reflooring/remodeling the kitchen with my mom, and b) reading the young miles 3-in-1 book that [livejournal.com profile] wolby & co. sent home with me (am presently halfway through the vor game).

which.

um.

YOU GUYS, I AM SUPER SPORADIC AND/OR THE JOHNNY-COME-LATELIEST EVER, BUT I FORGOT HOW MUCH I LOVE THESE WEIRDOS. also it would appear that somewhere between the time a couple years ago when i forced myself through komarr just so i could get to read civil campaign and, um, right now i have decided that STUFF IN SPACE IS REALLY COOL AND I LIKE IT A LOT. which is more than i can say for college-freshman me. (no literally, not joking, i had to make myself read the first 1/2 to 2/3 of komarr, not for any fault in the work but simply because -- working theory -- i think my brain was just too tiny to handle all the space-politics et cetera. or whatever, i don't know. the point is that RIGHT NOW I CAN WHOLLY RECOGNIZE THAT IT IS THE SHIT AND PEOPLE ARE LAUGHING AT ME BECAUSE I AM TAKING THIS BOOK WITH ME EVERWHERE AND LIKE, GOING HOME EARLY FROM PARTIES JUST SO I CAN GET SOME READING IN BEFORE BED. I AM NOT ASHAMED.)

ANYWAY, plus on top of all that the holidays are speeding on apace which means both my jobs are going crazy and then there's this girl i'm spending a bunch of time with and DEAR INTERNET FRIENDS I STILL LOVE YOU A LOT AND AM TOTALLY ALIVE, I PROMISE. i'm just mostly subsisting on pumpkin spice soymilk, ridiculous space dorks, trips to the local hardware store, and my amanda palmer/carbon leaf/a.f.i./radiohead playlist.

but tell me about you! or laugh at how much of a dork i am! or both!
themeletor: close-up of a cupcake in the grass against a blue sky (Default)
two orders of business.

1: for the many who may not already know this, both my parenst are episcopalian. after some erm, hum, hassles with the episcopal church (cue mel's disillusionment with organized religion, exhibits ### through ###), the diocese has finally granted my mom permission (yes. permission.) to worship with an actual parish again. all that harrumphing said and put aside, the priest of their new parish has a blog, ayia iluvatar, in which he proceeds to be a geek of the highest order. HEE! (also, his most recent posting, about the "personal ordinariates" shenanigans, continues to make my brain tired despite the excellent job he does of breaking it down into little words. what the balls, church?) (also, look at his last.fm!)

2: i had an awesome lunch today and then spent the rest of the afternoon working on my halloween costume, AIRSHIP PIRATE! (on zombie double-header kickball game night i'm adding zombie makeup to turn it into UNDEAD AIRSHIP PIRATE QUEEN!) i still have some handstitching to finish on the skirt, and i need to find a handful of different leggings/tights/thingummies that i can tear into and layer appropriately so i will not freeze my tush off on game night, but here is a terribly low-quality photo of the costume, mostly finished.

goggles down and the cannons up )

I DON'T KNOW ABOUT YOU, BUT I'M PRETTY EXCITED FOR THIS HALLOWEEN.

aka JACK, THE PUMPKIN KING~

aka a ginger brown sugar spice cake; the filling is a layer of (dairy free!) creme anglaise topped with locally grown parker pears poached in wisconsin rose wine (wollersheim's blushing rose, for those who are curious) and thinly sliced. decoration: hand-painted vegan fondant -- SLOWLY BUT SURELY I AM GETTING THE HANG OF THIS SHIT. >:[

more pictures - side view, cross-section )

for try two at vegan fondant (and for a completely experimental cake that i TOTALLY MADE UP IN MY HEAD), not bad at all! this is a dessert to which i believe i will actually return. with a little bit of tweaking it could be super badass. :D
themeletor: close-up of a cupcake in the grass against a blue sky (Default)
one of lion brand yarn's free patterns this month is an adorable amigurumi doll named patrick the pumpkin boy. he looks like this:

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

and needless to say i am going to crochet it. also i would really like the fic where patrick is born in a pumpkin patch. maybe pete is the farmer's son. or he's a gourd.

*

AND i watched the nightmare before christmas last night (with my friend who wants to produce it as a stage musical which will be awesome), AND while i was in goodwill shopping for formalwear to tear up for my badass zombie-fighting undead princess costume, "the batty bat" started playing over the storewide soundsystem.

... have i mentioned that this is my FAVORITE month?
themeletor: close-up of a cupcake in the grass against a blue sky (Default)
HAPPY OCTOBER!

welcome to my favorite month!

i've pretty much never gotten sucked into a journal-based rp - especially one i was just reading - but this (bandom/hp crossover rp) is taking over my reading life. oops.

btdubs, i'm not dead and a proper update is coming. probably regarding the recent date (last night) and the significantly less-recent cupcakes (last week, or the week before, or something, i don't even know any more), just as soon as i can wrangle together concrete results on either front.

really, if you want to know what's going on in my life, you should probably just be following me on twitter. blargh.
